What is a Badge?

Open badges are a form of digital certification which contain metadata, a visual component, and a narrative around which they are constructed. Badges are issued in a platform, and can be shared in social media or on a learner's website. Prospective employers or funders can check the metadata of a badge by clicking on it, and see exactly what skills are covered and what evidence was supplied.

What is iCAAFS?

iCAAFS is a project of Gaia U, originated by Andrew Langford. It consists of an ambitious vision to challenge the centralized accreditation and certification process used by mainstream education. We see iCAAFS as twofold, a toolbox for open badge issuing with a shared-cost model, and a learning community network growing the movement together.

iCAAFS goes beyound un/learning to have applications throughout the permaculture, social justice and regenerative movements. Some of the use cases we have identified are: - un/learning and skills
- participation, attendance and experiences
- monitoring, evaluation, and impact
- certifications of quality for land use and products.

The iCAAFS Onboarding Pathway Course

As badges represent a significant departure away from traditional thinking in education and accreditation, we found that many of our partners needed extra help in the on-boarding process to think through badge design and understand the ‘big picture’ impact a tool like this could have. For this reason we have compiled a brief course which will be launched early 2024.

For now if you are interested in iCAAFS, becoming a case-study partner, using and designing badges, or getting involved in our collaborative governance; please preview the course below and fill out your details in the form to register your interest.
